The Blues Brothers

My daughter, Eleanor, and I picked up The Blues Brothers---Dan and Jim---in Nashville, GA this a.m. after a frantic afternoon yesterday, trying to figure out what was going on.  I was set to take them to Jax, FL to meet another transporter and I called the HS in Nashville, GA and discovered all that had been changed!  ACK!!  Switched to EXTREME panic mode, called several people and found out that they had been placed with a veterinarian at Auburn University in Auburn, AL and that she was desperately trying to figure out how to get them there.  The HS manager gave me the vet's name and # and I called her.  I told her who I was and that I knew she was getting the two blue boys and she told me (in a very weary and worried voice) that she didn't know how she was going to get them to Auburn.  I said..."That's what I am calling for...I am bringing them to you!!"  I have never heard such relief in a voice.  She was so happy to hear from me and hear about WRR.  We eventually decided to meet in Eufaula, AL (2 1/2 hours for me, 1 1/2 hours for her, but I was happy because Eufaula has a great Cajun restaurant!).

Took me about an hour to spring them from the HS, paperwork, waiting my turn, etc.  It was my first ever visit to a shelter.  They had many kitties, a pot bellied pig and dogs in the back in kennels.  It was a truly sad place, but the lady there is sooo dedicated.  I had given her WRR information on the phone in case she ever needed us again.  She has talked with  Becky Weimer and some other weim rescue people, so I think we may be able to help again.  After she gave me the paperwork, I gave her a check, she explained the paperwork, one of the workers brought them to me (I was afraid I would have to go in the back and see the dogs and I didn't really want to do that.)

They are so pretty, blue, almost twins, undocked.  Very calm (after running loose in a small town for a few weeks and being in the shelter for almost 3 weeks---you would not believe the noise level there!)  One of them couldn't touch me enough, but neither jumped.  Jim leaned on me, put his head on my leg when we walked with the leash (did a fair job of walking with the leash..no fighting, just clueless).  I took them both out to the car...Eleanor had refused to go in, so she jumped out to take one and we walked them good, put them in the car (they had obviously NEVER gotten in a car).  You should have seen Eleanor picking them up and into the Expedition and then putting each in his comforter lined crate! *LOL*  I gave them each a stuffed, frozen Kong and a Nylabone--they had no idea what do to with them and these dogs were extremely thin, pitifully thin.  They looked like they hadn't had a decent meal in months.  But what loving boys they are, love being touched, petted, want to lean on your legs and Jim wants to put his head on your leg when you walk him and when you stop, he wants to put his head between your knees and stand quietly.  I nearly cried.

They laid down immediately and NEVER made a sound and NEVER got up until we got to Eufaula---over 2 hours.  The trip was unbelievably easy.

Met the new owner (who is a good friend of Susan Lauten, some of you may remember Susan from Hoflin--she is a canine nutritionist), she had brought Susan with her and the new owner's mom came too.  They were thrilled with the boys, but worried about how thin they are.  We talked for a while, took some photos, visited and had a really nice time.  It was a very rewarding and fulfilling day.

I have attached some pictures...I will try to explain each and hope that they are not too big.  If so, I apologize...I am soo excited about this!

See how skinny they both are?

The new owner and both boys---see the tail?

Merrilee, the boys, me with the doggie bags from the HS with all their important paperwork!

Thank you, Bob Reed, for contacting me and asking if I could go.  I could no more tell you no than I could fly backward!  (I KNOW I'll regret saying THAT!!)  Thank you, Bob Miller, for getting us all organized---more or less *g*---I gave her email info on both of you and  our web page, too.  They asked about making a donation to the WRR and I was so surprised, I stuttered and stammered and finally said..."Sure!"  *g*  Sometimes I forget to pack my brain.

Martha and Fritz ROS (that was MY crate, comforter, and Kong!!)

Editorial note:
The Blues Brothers are the first official WRR transport since beginning the organizing process in late July 2002.  The intent was to pick them up from a Georgia shelter and transport them to a foster home in Florida.  The shelter decided to place them in a home in Alabama instead,  but didn't notify anyone.  Martha checked in before starting the original trip and found out about the change.  Hurray for the permanent placement and her willingness to transport them to a completely different state at the last minute.

Also,  WRR doesn't take donations directly and is all volunteer with the volunteers footing the bill for their portion of the trip.  We can help you make a donation to a needy source though,  with links to some Weimaraner Rescue fund raising places on the net as well.

Thank you Martha for inaugurating the Weimaraner Rescue Railroad and beating the Arizona crew!
